
The Nationwide Human Rights Fee (NHRC) has ordered an on-spot inquiry into the alleged suicide by an engineering pupil from Nepal in her hostel room at KIIT, Bhubaneswar on February 16 and the following incidents on the campus.
The NHRC, which generally asks the state authorities to conduct a probe into any matter, has constituted its three-member staff to probe the demise of the Nepalese pupil, 20-year-old Prakriti Lamsal, and the assault on the protesting college students on the KIIT campus.
Based on the NHRC order issued on March 3, the fee has requested its Registrar (regulation) to conduct an on-spot inquiry at KIIT, Bhubaneswar, together with a staff of two officers from the investigation division — one not beneath the rank of SSP and one officer/official from the regulation division. The inquiry shall be carried out as per the provisions of Safety of Human Rights Act, 1993, says the order. The fee has sought the inquiry report by March 10.
The NHRC issued the order on a criticism filed by a Bhubaneswar resident, Ashutosh B, who alleged that Prakriti died by suicide after allegedly being harassed by one other pupil, Advik Srivastava. He additionally accused KIIT’s Worldwide Relations Workplace (IRO) of neglecting Prakriti’s complaints and “contributing to her suicide”.
