The Crime Department of the Delhi Police final week arrested 4 members of an interstate gang allegedly concerned within the smuggling of banned branded worldwide cigarettes.
A complete of 6.5 lakh cigarettes value Rs 66 lakh have been seized from the accused – Anas, 32; Saqib, 32; Sameer Ur Rehman, 23; and Sagar Haswani, 45 – working in Guwahati and Delhi, stated Sanjay Kumar Sain, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Department), on Sunday.
On December 12, following a tip-off, an Inter-State Cell (ISC) of the Crime Department led by Inspector Satendra Mohan beneath the supervision of ACP Ramesh Chander Lamba raided two places in central Delhi’s Lahori Gate space. It seized 4,70,000 Esse Lights and 80,000 DJARUM Black cigarettes at a godown in Katra Hiddu being run in a partnership by Saqib and Anas, whereas 1,00,800 Gudang Garam cigarettes have been seized from Rehman’s material store on the bottom ground of a constructing in Gali Samosa Wali, the police stated.
The cigarette bins lacked the statutory well being warnings stipulated by the Union Ministry of Well being and Household Welfare and have been being saved in preparation for distribution throughout the town, stated DCP Sain, including that the three accused have been accordingly arrested beneath Sections 7 and 20 of the Cigarettes and Different Tobacco Merchandise Act (COTPA).
“Saqib and Anas equipped the cigarettes to retail sellers, and Sameer was liable for managing the distribution in Delhi. They revealed that their companion Sagar Haswani procured the cigarettes from Guwahati (Assam) at a decrease price and transported them to Delhi,” stated the officer.
