In a latest masterclass, senior cinematographer Kiran Deohans recounted the challenges of lighting a romantic sequence within the track “Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein” from the 2008 movie Jodhaa Akbar, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. He defined that they needed to create an elaborate setup to provide the impression that the room was illuminated by the reflection of the setting solar. Later within the track, the lighting modifications because the crescent moon comes up, and the room is crammed with candlelight.
The masterclass by Deohans, who has shot Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), Karan Johar’s iconic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and others, was hosted by Flare Cinematography Movie Competition. Cinematographer Pooja Gupte, who based Flare with the goal to construct a group of cinematographers to share their experience and assist construct their talent set, believes that studying about such fascinating experiences, distinctive challenges and handle intricate setups is the concept behind holding such masterclasses and discussions.
In continuation of that effort, Flare was set to host a cinematographers’ meet on Wednesday as a part of the continuing Kala Ghoda Arts Competition at Cama Corridor in Mumbai. Cinematographers Deohans, Fowzia Fathima, Siddharth Diwan, Deepti Gupta, Neha Parti Matiyani, Anil Mehta, and Priyanka Singh will participate within the meet.
“Whereas the American Movie Institute and numerous cinema our bodies in Europe maintain such masterclasses and conversations recurrently, we not often do this in India,” stated Gupte, who studied cinematography at Satyajit Ray Movie and Tv Institute, Kolkata. Sharing private experiences, believes Gupte, is a step in the direction of “making a group and to facilitate talent improvement”.
One of many main challenges that cinematographers face whereas engaged on an enormous set is to deal with the sunshine and keep continuity. “Whereas an motion scene wants choreography, lighting is of utmost significance in a romantic scene,” stated Gupte. That aside, one of many largest groups on a movie set belongs to the cinematography division. “So, managing a crew is one other problem,” added Gupte.
The cinematographers’ meet at Cama Corridor can be held from 4 pm to six pm.
