Earlier generally known as Mandvi Sugar Cooperative, the manufacturing facility was renamed Junnar Sugars in 2019 after the homeowners of the latter received the public sale for the premises located at Bodhan village. The protesting farmers stated they had been in opposition to privatisation of the manufacturing facility.
On studying that Junnar Sugars had began manufacturing within the manufacturing facility, farmers, labour contractors and transport automobile homeowners on Tuesday staged a dharna outdoors the principle gate of the premises.
The Mandvi Sugar Bachavo Samiti president Sandeep Sharma stated, “We’re protesting as we’ve come to know that Junnar Sugars has been working the boiler for the previous couple of days. They’ve bought sugarcane from farmers of neighbouring Tapi district and have began crushing actions to fabricate sugar. The sugar mill didn’t have IEM (Industrial Entrepreneur Memorandum) – a licence to run the manufacturing facility. So, how might they run such a manufacturing facility?”
Sharma additional alleged that the sugar mill has illegally obtained energy connection.
Authorities at Junnar Sugars couldn’t be contacted for touch upon the allegations.
Sharma stated, “We’re protesting in opposition to privatisation of the Mandvi sugar mills, which has been bought by the consortium of banks to Junnar Sugars Restricted. Final yr, we had made representations to 2 ministers however no motion has been taken in opposition to Junnar Sugars until date.”
