What’s phulkari?

Parul Sachdeva, assistant Professor, faculty of design, Alliance College, stated that the phrase “phulkari” comes from the Punjabi phrases “Phul (ਫੁੱਲ),” that means flower, and “Kari (ਕਾਰੀ),” that means craft, and roughly interprets flower embroidery. This conventional craft graces scarves, shawls, and stoles worn by ladies in South Asia. Phuliya, however, refers back to the particular items or clothes adorned with this embroidery.

Sachdeva traces phulkari’s origins to the fifteenth century. Its historic and cultural significance lies in its connection to Punjabi folklore, literature, and music. “It’s greater than only a craft; it’s the soul of Punjab, symbolising ardour, goals, and feelings. Sitting down with a needle and thread isn’t just weaving—it’s coming into a realm of reminiscences, heritage, and artistry,” she stated.

How are they made?

Creating phulkari includes a painstakingly-detailed course of. Artisans sit down with a needle and thread to hand-stitch vibrant, symmetrical patterns onto materials like cotton or silk. The palette—dominated by fiery orange, radiant crimson, and golden yellow—captures the spirit of Punjab’s landscapes and festivals.

“Each sew is infused with identification and custom,” Sachdeva stated.

Phulkari as heirloom

Phulkari serves as greater than a trend accent; these handcrafted gadgets are cherished heirlooms that join generations. “Historically, phulkari items have been gifted to daughters at their weddings, reinforcing familial bonds and the continuity of cultural traditions,” she stated.
