Over 100 years after a white mob attacked a then-thriving Black group in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Division of Justice introduced the first-ever federal probe into the 1921 Tulsa Race Bloodbath.
The assault on the Greenwood neighborhood, sometimes called “Black Wall Avenue,” left as much as 300 folks killed and houses and companies in spoil.
Kristen Clarke, the assistant lawyer normal for civil rights who introduced the evaluation in an announcement Monday, referred to the bloodbath as “one of many deadliest episodes of mass racial violence on this nation’s historical past.”
The DOJ’s announcement comes after the Oklahoma Supreme Courtroom in June dismissed a reparations case filed by survivors of the bloodbath with out going to trial.

In July, survivors Lessie Benningfield Randle, 109, and Viola Ford Fletcher, 110, made a plea to the Biden administration to invoke the 2007 Act, which permits for chilly instances of violent crimes towards Black folks dedicated earlier than 1970 to be reopened and investigated.
Damario Solomon-Simmons, lead lawyer for the Tulsa Race Bloodbath Survivors, celebrated the choice in a press convention Monday.
